Why is the coverage so skewed?

Depending on the source, the current death count in the Syrian Civil War stands somewhere between 170,000 and 180,000. The conflict has persisted for more than three years. More than 9,000 children have been killed. Tens of thousands detained, tortured and murdered.

Meanwhile, in the 30 days since fighting erupted in Gaza, the body count stands at a little less than 2,000.

These numbers stand in stark contrast to the reporting efforts of the world’s media, however.

The number of Google News search results on Syria: 41,400.

The number of Google News search results on the Israel/Gaza conflict: 22,200,000.

The delta on news coverage of these conflicts stands at more than 99.99%.

So the question is: why? Why is the world so heavily focused in a conflict that represents about 1% of the casualties of the other? What’s the motivation?
